If you have started noticing your jawline looking a little softer than it used to, or a bit of heaviness creeping in around the lower face, you are not imagining it, and you are definitely not alone. Jowls are one of the most common things women mention to me from their mid 40s onwards, usually while gently pulling their skin back in the mirror and asking “can anything actually be done about this without surgery?”

The good news is yes, quite a lot can. So let me talk you through what causes jowls and the honest, non surgical ways to soften them.

What are jowls, and why do they happen?

Jowls are that sagging or heaviness that develops along the lower face and jawline as we age. They are not about weight or letting yourself go, they are simply what happens when the scaffolding of your skin starts to weaken.

Two things are mostly to blame. First, from our late 30s and into our 40s and 50s we produce less collagen and elastin, the proteins that keep skin firm and springy. Second, the little pads of fat and support that once sat high in the face gradually slip downwards. Add gravity and years of sun exposure, and the result is skin that feels looser along the jaw. For a lot of women it speeds up around the menopause, when that collagen drop really accelerates.

In other words, it is completely normal, and it is not your fault.

how to get rid of jowls without surgery

Can you really get rid of jowls without surgery?

Let me be honest with you, because I always will be. A surgical facelift is the only thing that will physically lift and remove significant sagging, so if your jowls are very advanced, I am not going to promise you the earth.

But for mild to moderate jowls, which is what most women in their 40s and 50s are dealing with, there is genuinely a lot we can do to firm, tighten and soften the area without a single scalpel or drop of filler. The aim is to rebuild your skin’s own strength and quality, so the jawline looks firmer and more defined naturally.

The treatments that actually help

The trick with jowls is stimulating your skin to make more of its own collagen and elastin, and improving its overall firmness and quality. These are the treatments I turn to most:

  • Microneedling, which creates tiny controlled channels in the skin to kickstart a fresh wave of collagen, gradually firming and improving texture.
  • Polynucleotides, a wonderful regenerative treatment that repairs and strengthens the skin from within, improving quality and elasticity where skin has started to slacken.
  • Profhilo, a bio remodelling treatment that deeply hydrates and boosts firmness across the lower face, so skin looks tighter and healthier without adding any volume.
  • Skin boosters, which flood the skin with hydration and support, giving that plumped, firmer, glowing look.

There is also a different but very popular approach that works on the muscles rather than the skin:

  • Anti wrinkle injections (Botox), which are one of my most requested treatments for the lower face. By relaxing the specific muscles that pull the jawline and the corners of the mouth downwards, like the DAO, and softening the platysma bands that run down the neck, we can help lift and define the jawline and soften the look of jowls. It is a brilliant non surgical, no filler way to sharpen the lower face, and it works beautifully alongside the skin firming treatments above.

Very often the best results come from combining a couple of these into a little plan, rather than relying on one thing. That is something I always tailor to your skin at a consultation, after a proper skin analysis.

What you can do at home too

Treatments do the heavy lifting, but your daily habits genuinely matter for keeping jowls at bay:

  • Wear SPF every single day. Sun damage breaks down collagen faster than almost anything, so this is your number one defence.
  • Use a good vitamin C and a retinoid if your skin tolerates it, to support collagen over time.
  • Stay hydrated, eat plenty of collagen supporting foods, and try not to smoke, which ages skin quickly.

None of this reverses jowls on its own, but it slows things down and makes everything else work harder.

My honest take

You do not have to accept a softening jawline, and you certainly do not have to jump straight to surgery or filler to do something about it. For most women, a considered plan of collagen stimulating and firming treatments, paired with good skincare, makes a real, natural difference, and keeps you looking like a firmer, fresher version of yourself.
