One of the most common conversations I have with clients at Sorelle Skin Clinic starts with the same question:
“I’m using so many skincare products… so why isn’t my skin improving?”
In many cases, the issue isn’t that people aren’t trying. In fact, it’s often the opposite, they’re using too many products influenced by trends, social media recommendations, and viral skincare routines.
Over the past few years, platforms like TikTok have dramatically changed how people discover skincare. While some advice online can be helpful, much of it is based on trends rather than evidence.
As a result, many people are building skincare routines around products that are popular online but not necessarily backed by clinical data or formulated to create real skin change.
The TikTok Skincare Effect
One of the biggest shifts I’ve seen recently is how quickly skincare trends spread online.
A single viral video can send thousands of people rushing to buy a product overnight. Suddenly, everyone is using the same serum, toner, or mask because it’s been labelled a “miracle product.”
But here’s the reality.
Just because a product is trending doesn’t mean it’s effective.
Social media rewards before-and-after transformations and quick claims, but real skin improvement rarely happens overnight.
Healthy skin is built through consistent routines, evidence-based ingredients, and professional guidance, not viral products.
The Rise of Korean Skincare Trends
Korean skincare has become extremely popular in recent years, particularly because of its multi-step routines and attractive packaging.
Many clients come to the clinic using 7–10 Korean skincare products at once, often inspired by routines they’ve seen online.
While some of these products can be hydrating and enjoyable to use, many focus primarily on cosmetic texture and short-term glow rather than long-term skin correction.
The reality is that many of these products are not designed to:
- Stimulate collagen production
- Treat pigmentation at a cellular level
- Improve skin structure
- Deliver active ingredients deeply into the skin
This is where the difference between cosmetic skincare and clinical skincare becomes very important.
The Problem With Trend-Based Routines
Another issue I frequently see is clients layering multiple products recommended by influencers without understanding how the ingredients interact.
For example, I often see routines that include:
- Multiple exfoliating acids
- Several hydrating toners
- Layered serums with overlapping ingredients
- Heavy occlusive creams
While each product may seem beneficial on its own, combining them all can overwhelm the skin.
Instead of improving the skin, this can lead to:
• irritation
• breakouts
• sensitivity
• inflammation
• a damaged skin barrier
Ironically, people often add even more products to fix these problems, making the cycle worse.
Why Professional Skincare Is Different
Professional skincare is formulated very differently from many products that trend online.
Clinical formulas are developed with evidence-based ingredients, controlled concentrations, and advanced delivery systems designed to target the deeper layers of the skin.
These ingredients are often backed by research demonstrating their ability to support real skin change, such as:
- collagen stimulation
- improved skin renewal
- pigmentation correction
- long-term barrier support
Because of this, effective routines often require fewer products, not more.
The Most Effective Skincare Routines Are Usually the Simplest
When I review a client’s routine in clinic, one of the first things I often do is simplify it.
Instead of ten different steps, a routine may only need:
- A gentle cleanser
- One targeted serum
- A supportive moisturiser
- Daily SPF
With the right professional products, this simple routine can deliver significantly better results than a complex routine built around trends.
The Bottom Line
Social media has made skincare more accessible than ever, but it has also created a huge amount of confusion.
Trending products, viral routines, and influencer recommendations can make it seem like you need dozens of products to achieve healthy skin.
In reality, the most effective skincare routines are simple, consistent, and built around ingredients that are supported by real evidence.
If your skincare routine feels overwhelming or you’re not seeing the results you expected, it may not be about adding more products it may simply be about choosing the right ones.
