One of the questions I’m asked almost every day in clinic is:

“How often should I get a facial?”

The answer isn’t the same for everyone.

While many beauty blogs will tell you that everyone should book a facial every month, the reality is that your skin doesn’t read beauty blogs. Your skin responds to your concerns, your lifestyle, your home skincare routine and your skin’s ability to heal.

After years of treating hundreds of clients at Sorelle Skin Clinic, here’s the advice I genuinely give people sitting in my treatment room.

facial before and after results answering how often should you get a facial

The Short Answer

For most people, I recommend a professional facial every 4 weeks.

Why?

Because your skin needs time.

After a professional treatment, your skin goes through a natural repair and regeneration process. Giving it around four weeks allows those changes to take place before introducing another treatment.

It’s tempting to think that more facials equal faster results.

In reality, more isn’t always better.

Sometimes giving your skin the opportunity to repair is exactly what produces the best outcome.

Why 4 Weeks Is Often the Sweet Spot

Your skin is constantly renewing itself.

While this process varies depending on age and skin health, allowing approximately four weeks between treatments gives your skin time to:

  • Repair
  • Strengthen
  • Respond to active ingredients
  • Build healthy skin function
  • Show visible improvements

I often explain to clients that skincare isn’t about chasing instant results—it’s about creating consistent improvements over time.

When Every 4 Weeks Isn’t Enough

There are exceptions.

If a client is working towards a specific skin goal, I’ll often recommend treatments every 2-3 weeks for a short period.

This commonly includes:

  • Acne
  • Hormonal breakouts
  • Pigmentation
  • Post-inflammatory pigmentation
  • Congested skin

The aim isn’t to keep treating forever.

The aim is to create momentum.

Once the skin has improved, we usually move onto a maintenance schedule every four to six weeks.

What I Do Differently in Clinic

One thing I don’t believe in is asking clients to simply book a facial and hope for the best.

Instead, we work together on a 12-week skin transformation plan.

That usually includes:

  • Professional treatments every 2-3 weeks (if needed)
  • A customised home skincare routine
  • Regular check-ins between appointments
  • Adjustments to products if the skin changes
  • Reviewing progress at every visit

Skin isn’t static.

Hormones, stress, sleep and the seasons all affect how it behaves, so your treatment plan should adapt too.

A Real Example From Clinic

A client came to me struggling with persistent hormonal acne.

Rather than relying on occasional facials, we committed to a structured 12-week programme.

She attended appointments every 2-3 weeks while following a consistent home skincare routine.

Between appointments, I checked in regularly to make sure her products were working well and made adjustments whenever her skin needed them.

The difference was significant.

Because we stayed consistent, the inflammation settled much faster than it would have with occasional treatments alone.

Once her skin became calmer and healthier, we reduced treatments to a maintenance schedule every four to six weeks.

This is something I see time and time again.

Consistency nearly always beats intensity.

Sometimes the Best Treatment Is No Facial

This surprises people.

Not every new client receives a facial at their first appointment.

If someone arrives with:

  • A severely impaired skin barrier
  • Inflamed acne
  • Extremely reactive skin
  • Significant redness

I often recommend not having a facial straight away.

Instead, we spend around four weeks rebuilding the skin barrier first.

This usually involves:

  • Simplifying their skincare routine
  • Using barrier-supporting ingredients
  • Reducing inflammation
  • Reviewing progress every two weeks

Only when the skin is healthier do we begin professional facial treatments.

Treating an inflamed skin barrier too aggressively often creates more problems than it solves.

The Biggest Myth About How Often You Should Get a Facial

One misconception I hear regularly is:

“If I have a facial every week, I’ll get results faster.”

Actually, the opposite can happen.

Your skin needs time to recover, repair and regenerate after treatment.

Constantly stimulating the skin without allowing that recovery time can slow progress or even increase sensitivity.

For most people, allowing your skin to complete that healing process before your next facial delivers better, longer-lasting results.

So… How Often Should You Get a Facial?

Here’s the guide I generally recommend.

Your GoalRecommended Frequency
Healthy skin maintenanceEvery 4 weeks
General skin healthEvery 4-6 weeks
Acne & hormonal breakoutsEvery 2-3 weeks initially
PigmentationEvery 2-3 weeks initially
Skin transformation programmeEvery 2-3 weeks for around 12 weeks
Compromised skin barrierBarrier repair first before facial treatments

Remember, this is only a guide.

The best treatment schedule is always based on your individual skin, not someone else’s.

My Advice

If there’s one thing I’ve learnt over years of treating clients, it’s this:

Healthy skin isn’t created by having more treatments. It’s created by having the right treatments at the right time, supported by a consistent home skincare routine.

When we work with the skin instead of constantly trying to force change, that’s when the best results happen.
