If you have been anywhere near skincare lately, you have probably heard people talking about Profhilo. It has become one of those treatments everyone seems to be whispering about, usually followed by “but what actually is it?” So let me explain it properly, in plain English, the way I would if you were sat in my clinic with a cup of tea.

So, what is Profhilo?

Profhilo is an injectable treatment made from hyaluronic acid, which is a substance your skin naturally produces to keep itself hydrated and plump. As we get older we make less of it, which is a big part of why skin starts to look drier, thinner and less bouncy over time.

Here is the clever bit. Rather than sitting in one spot, Profhilo spreads out under the skin and does two jobs at once: it floods the area with deep, lasting hydration, and it gently stimulates your skin to produce more of its own collagen and elastin. That is why you will often hear it called a bio remodelling treatment. It is not just topping your skin up, it is encouraging it to behave younger.

Is Profhilo a filler? (the question I get most)

No, and this is the part I really want you to understand, because it is close to my heart. Profhilo is not a filler.

Filler is designed to add volume and change the shape of a feature, a lip or a cheek for example. Profhilo does not do that. It will not plump one area up or change your face. Instead, it improves the overall quality of your skin: the hydration, the firmness, the glow, the smoothness. You still look completely like you, just like you on a really well rested, well hydrated day.

That is exactly why I love it and why it fits my no filler approach so perfectly. It works with your skin rather than sitting on top of it, and the results look natural because they are your own skin doing the work.

What does Profhilo actually do for your skin?

Profhilo is brilliant for the kind of changes that creep in from our late 30s onwards. It can help with:

  • Firmness, gently improving skin that has started to feel a little lax or crepey
  • Deep hydration, plumping skin from within so it looks dewier and healthier
  • Smoothness and glow, softening the look of fine lines and dullness
  • Skin quality overall, on the face and also lovely on the neck, hands and décolletage, the areas that often give our age away

It is not an overnight, dramatic change, and I would always rather be honest with you about that. It is a gradual, natural improvement that builds over a few weeks, leaving your skin looking healthier, firmer and more radiant.

Who is Profhilo best for?

It is a gorgeous option if you are noticing the early signs of ageing, skin that feels less firm than it used to, dryness that creams alone are not fixing, or a general loss of that healthy glow. It is especially loved by women in their 40s and 50s, which is exactly the stage where our natural hydration and collagen really start to dip.

As always though, I never treat two people the same. I start every treatment with a proper skin analysis so I can see what is actually going on and recommend the right thing for you, rather than a one size fits all plan.

What can I expect from the treatment?

Profhilo is quick and well tolerated. It is placed at a few precise points, and afterwards you may notice small raised bumps where it has been injected, which settle within a day or so as the product spreads and gets to work.

For the best results I usually recommend a short initial course, then the odd top up to maintain it. There is very little downtime, so most people carry on with their day quite happily.

How it fits with my other treatments

Profhilo plays beautifully alongside my other regenerative treatments. Some clients combine or compare it with polynucleotides or skin boosters, depending on their skin and their goals, and I will always talk you through which is the better fit. If you would like to see the two side by side, I have written a full guide on Profhilo versus polynucleotides too.

Is Profhilo worth it?

If you want firmer, more hydrated, healthier looking skin without changing your face or going anywhere near filler, then honestly, yes, I think it is one of the loveliest treatments out there for skin quality. It is natural, it is subtle, and it works with what you already have.

If that sounds like exactly what your skin has been asking for, have a read of my Profhilo treatment page, or book a skin consultation and we will work out the right plan together.
