If you’ve been Googling “is microneedling worth it,” you’re not alone. It’s one of the most talked about skin treatments right now, and one of the questions I’m asked most often at my clinic in Great Barr. So let me give you the honest answer, the kind I’d give a friend, without the marketing fluff.

The short version? Yes. When it’s done properly, by someone who knows what they’re doing, microneedling is one of the most effective ways to genuinely improve your skin’s texture, firmness and glow. But it’s worth understanding what it actually does and what to expect, so here’s everything, in plain English.

What is microneedling, really?

Microneedling, sometimes called collagen induction therapy, uses ultra fine needles to create hundreds of tiny, controlled channels in the surface of your skin. I know that sounds a lot scarier than it is. Done by a professional, it’s gentle, and there’s numbing cream to keep you comfortable.

Those tiny channels send your skin a simple message: time to repair. That kicks off your body’s own natural healing response, which means fresh collagen and elastin, the two things that keep skin firm, smooth and bouncy. Think of it as a gym session for your skin. Nothing artificial, nothing that changes your natural features, just your own skin rebuilding its strength from the inside out.

So, is microneedling actually worth it?

For the vast majority of my clients, yes. It’s one of the few non invasive treatments that works at a deeper level rather than just sitting on the surface, and it does it with very little downtime. It won’t plump like filler or freeze anything like anti wrinkle injections. What it does instead is rebuild what your skin has quietly lost over the years. If you want real, gradual, natural looking improvement rather than a quick fix that fades in a week, this is a treatment worth your time.

What results can you expect?

Results build gradually, but they’re real. Most people notice:

  • Softer fine lines and wrinkles
  • Smoother, more even texture
  • Smaller looking pores
  • Faded acne scars and pigmentation
  • Firmer, bouncier skin
  • A healthy glow that lasts far longer than a facial

Most people see a fresh glow within a week, and the deeper changes keep building for weeks after each session as your collagen remodels.

Is microneedling worth it after 40?

This one deserves its own answer, because it’s the question I hear most. If you’re in your 40s and feel like no cream or serum is working anymore, you’re not imagining it. So many women tell me the same thing: “My skin just doesn’t bounce back like it used to.”

Here’s why. When we’re younger, our skin makes plenty of collagen and elastin. By our 40s, that production slows right down, which is exactly why the products you’ve trusted for years suddenly don’t seem to do much. They can only work on the surface. They can’t fix what’s changing underneath.

That’s where microneedling comes into its own. Instead of just treating the surface, it gets your skin working like it used to. For many of my clients in their 40s, it’s the treatment that finally makes their skin feel alive again, softer lines, smaller pores, a firmer feel and a glow that lasts. If that sounds like you, it could genuinely be the turning point.

Is microneedling worth it for acne scars and pigmentation?

Yes, and this is one of the areas where it really shines. By stimulating collagen deep in the skin, microneedling gently smooths uneven texture and softens the appearance of scars over time. Results improve session by session rather than overnight, which is exactly what you want for scarring.

For pigmentation and sun damage there’s a bit more nuance, because the right approach depends on your skin. I’ve written more about that here: does microneedling really work for pigmentation and sun damage.

How many sessions will you need?

It depends on your skin and your goals, but as a general guide:

  • For overall rejuvenation and glow: around 3 sessions, 4 to 6 weeks apart
  • For acne scarring or deeper texture concerns: 4 to 6 sessions
  • For maintenance: roughly every 4 to 6 months to keep your skin collagen rich

We build your plan together based on what your skin actually needs. No generic packages. If acne scarring is your main concern, I’ve gone into the numbers in more detail here: how many microneedling sessions you really need for acne scars.

Does microneedling hurt?

It’s much more comfortable than people expect. I apply a topical numbing cream before we start, and most clients describe the treatment as mild pressure or a light prickling feeling rather than anything painful.

What’s the downtime? Here it is day by day

This is one of the questions I’m asked most, so here’s the honest, no surprises breakdown:

  • Straight after: your skin will look red and feel a little warm, similar to a mild sunburn. That’s completely normal and it’s the sign your collagen is being triggered.
  • Day 1: still a little red, warm or tight. Keep to gentle skincare and plenty of hydration. I send you home with an aftercare cream.
  • Day 2: redness starts to fade. You might notice slight dryness or a little flaking. Skip active ingredients for now.
  • Day 3: most of the visible redness has gone, and your skin starts looking brighter and smoother. Most people are back to normal at this point.
  • Days 5 to 7: that glow really shows up as collagen builds beneath the surface.

Aftercare is simple: avoid intense exercise for 24 hours, stay out of the sun, wear your SPF every day, and keep your products gentle while your skin settles.

How long do the results last?

Results can last several months, depending on your skincare and lifestyle. To keep your skin at its best, I usually recommend a maintenance session every few months rather than letting things drift.

Can it be combined with other treatments?

Absolutely, and often that’s where the magic happens. Microneedling pairs beautifully with skin boosters, polynucleotides, PRP and exosomes to take your results further, and it sits beautifully alongside regenerative boosters like Profhilo and Mesotherapy. If you’re weighing up the add ons, here’s my honest take on microneedling with PRP versus exosomes.

Who is microneedling suitable for?

It suits a wide range of skin concerns, including ageing skin, acne scarring, pigmentation and uneven texture. That said, it isn’t right for absolutely everyone or every moment, which is why I always start with a proper skin analysis before we go ahead.

Why my clients choose Dermapen 4 at Sorelle

Not all microneedling is equal, and the device matters. I use Dermapen 4, one of the most advanced systems available, and as an official Dermapen Brand Ambassador I’ve trained directly with the brand. That means your treatment is tailored to your skin, carried out safely, and designed around real results rather than a one size fits all approach. You can read more about how I use Dermapen 4 to transform skin, and about microneedling at my Birmingham clinic.

A quick client story

Sarah, 43, came to me feeling frustrated that her skin was dull no matter what she used. After three microneedling sessions she messaged me to say people were asking if she’d changed her skincare, and that she felt confident without makeup for the first time in years. That’s the kind of change that makes me love what I do. Not just what you see in the mirror, but how you feel in your own skin.

So, is microneedling worth it?

If you want to improve your skin naturally, boost your own collagen and see real, lasting results without harsh procedures, then yes, microneedling is absolutely worth it. It’s one of the most effective treatments I offer for genuinely healthier skin, and for so many of my clients it’s the one that finally makes the difference.
